Daily Maintenance of Axle Gearboxes for Tunnel Engineering Locomotives
Introduction to Locomotive Axle Gearboxes
Product Overview:
The locomotive axle gearbox is a new type of drive unit developed by our company, suitable for the running mechanisms of railway locomotives, mining locomotives, new energy locomotives, tourist mini-trains, and steel ladle transport locomotives in steel mills. Its external appearance and internal structure are similar across models. The gearbox features an optimized design with hardened gear surfaces, offering low noise, compact size, lightweight construction, high torque transmission, high efficiency, smooth operation, and a long service life.

The internal structure utilizes hardened gear transmission. The gears and gear shafts are made of 20CrMnTi steel, featuring carburizing and quenching treatment, double-sided gear grinding, and a surface hardness of 56–62 HRC. The machining accuracy grade is Grade 6 (GB/T10095-2001). The wheel axles are made of axle steel or 40Cr steel, with a quenched and tempered hardness of 255–296 HB. The bearings are domestically produced Class D bearings (manufactured by HRB, ZWZ, and LYC), and the oil seals are the TG4 series triple-lip skeleton oil seals produced by TTO (Taiwan), providing excellent dust protection and sealing performance.
Operating Conditions
Ambient Temperature: -40℃ to +45℃. If the ambient temperature is below 0℃, the lubricating oil must be preheated before startup.
High-Speed Shaft Speed: Must not exceed the maximum value of 1450 rpm as specified in the product design drawings.
Peak Load: The instantaneous allowable peak load is 2.0 times the rated torque.
Duty Cycle: Suitable for continuous, short-time, or intermittent duty cycles, and capable of bidirectional rotation.

Operation and Maintenance
The internal structures of the axle gearboxes produced by our company are similar, and the disassembly and assembly processes are basically the same. Before maintenance and disassembly, all lubricating oil must be drained first. Prior to reassembly, all components must be thoroughly cleaned. During assembly, the inner ring of the bearing must fit tightly against the shaft shoulder (a 0.5 mm feeler gauge must not be able to pass through), and the gear meshing clearance must meet the manufacturer's requirements. Before assembly, the sealant on all housing mating surfaces must be carefully removed, and new sealant must be applied to all static mating surfaces.
After maintenance and assembly, the gearbox must be filled with the specified amount of lubricating oil and undergo a no-load test, running for 1 hour in both forward and reverse directions. It must meet the following requirements:
(1) All connecting fasteners are secure and free of looseness.
(2) There is no oil leakage at any sealing mating surfaces.
(3) Operation is smooth, with no impact or abnormal noise.
(4) Lubrication is sufficient, and the temperatures of the bearings and oil sump are within normal ranges.

Maintenance Cycle
| Time Intervals | Specification |
|---|---|
| 1. Every 6 months or 3000 operating hours | a). Check oil quality & Oil level b). Check the seals for leakage |
| 2. Depending on the operating conditions, at least every 3 years | a). Change the mineral oil b). Replace anti-friction bearing grease c). Replace oil seal |
| 3. According to oil temperature | |
| 4. Irregular inspection (Depend on the external factors) | a). Improve or renew the surface protection paint/Anti corrosive paint |
